Our Boxing Instructor
I started boxing in California in 1980 when I was 9 years old for the Boys Club of San Bernardino until late 1983. We were a rather respected team in Southern California for our style of fighting, and my coach, Robert Coons, had even been requested to be an assistant coach for the USA Boxing Team for the 1980 Olympics in Los Angeles. We traveled to many cities to compete in local tournaments to gain experience and competition. One of many cities was Pomona, where I often competed against a local favorite by the name of Shane Mosley at the Police Athletics League, also known as the Pomona PAL Boxing Club. At the age of 11, I had won the Junior Olympics in Southern California, a state competition in Nevada, and in Arizona. In 1985, my father re-enlisted in the USAF and was ordered to move to Texas, and we were stationed at Carswell AFB in Fort Worth, Texas, so I continued my boxing career in 1987 at Gormans Super Pros, where I had sparring sessions with nationally ranked and Olympic contender Sergio Reyes and lost a close decision to Paulie Ayala in a tournament that later became an IBF World Champion. When I moved to Arlington in early 1990s and trained on and off at Arlington's Boys Club, I won several regional Golden Gloves competitions in 1993, 1997, and 1998. As you can tell, boxing has been a passion of mine for nearly 40 years, and i would like to pass my training and experience on to those interested in learning proper form of boxing.
